Florianópolis: 4 Tips of What to Do in a Lazy Sunday

Parque de Coqueiros.

Florianópolis is that typical city where people come to spend the summer, because the main attractions in the city are related with a sunny and warm day. After all, there are 42 beaches in Florianópolis 😮. But it's not always that you are in the mood to enjoy the beach, or maybe the weather is not allowing you to do that.

No matter what the reason is you don't have to spend your time in Florianópolis locked in the house or in the hotel. So, this post has 4 different places for you to go on a lazy Sunday, as I chose to call this no beach day.

That piece of nature in the middle of the concrete jungle. There are maaaany ducks and some turtles and cute marmosets in this space. Actually I didn't know previously, but the Horto Florestal title is normally given to protected areas of native forest near urban centers.

Inside the park there are two ponds, one pretty near the entrance with a fountain in the middle of it and the other one more in the middle of the park where you can see the turtles. Near this second pond there is some works of art and an open air gym. This open air gyms are very famous in many parks and squares in most cities of Brazil (that I've visited before).

The beginning of a walking/jogging track is also near this second pond. And this is a long track, longer than I imagined for a park in the middle of the city. There is also a colorful kids playground and a wooden stage in front of it.

This is a great place to relax, sit quiet, read a book, do exercise and feel like breathing some fresh air. Also if you want to do a picnic this could be a nice place for it, even though it doesn't have picnic tables, so you would have to sit on the floor.

Address: Rua João Pio Duarte Silva, 535 - Córrego Grande.

Opening days and hours:
  • Everyday: 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM

The Botanical Garden is also another great place to visit in a lazy Sunday. I've already written a post just about Florianópolis Botanical Garden, you can access it clicking here. As you will read, this Botanical Garden still isn't an impressive place, but it's a good place to relax and do those same things I mentioned previously in Horto Florestal.

One difference is that here you will find the picnic tables. But there is also a pond and a kids playground. In my opinion this is a great place to spend a morning or afternoon with friends having picnic or alone reading, but it's not the kind of place to go visit like a touristic spot, because you may be disappointed.

Address Rodovia Admar Gonzaga, 742-782 - Itacorubi.

Opening days: From Thursday to Sunday

Opening hours:

  • From March to October: 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM
  • From November to February: 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM

Beiramar Avenue is the right place to go if you would like to see an amazing sun set. This avenue goes along the shore and there is a sidewalk big enough for many people to walk, besides a bike lane.

If you go there by the end of the afternoon you will see many people jogging. In a part of it there is volleyball courts, I heard it's difficult to find the courts free to play, there are always some groups there, but maybe if you ask they will let you play along.

The government is trying to make the sea near it suitable for bathing. Yes, unfortunately, the sea in that area isn't suitable for bathing. But at least they are finally doing something to change it. In the meanwhile, watching the sun set from there is more than enough. Really, it's one of the most beautiful sun sets I've seen.

Another place to go jogging or relax, depends on you, is this park. It has a very big jogging track and a nice view of the sea. It's hasn't many trees so during the afternoon there is too much sun and few places by shadow.

As you may know most of Florianópolis is an island, but this park is in the continental part of Florianópolis. And it's a great place to go with the family, friends and pets. I saw maaany people with dogs there, because it is a very biiig open space and the dogs seemed to have a lot of fun, the same as the kids.

There is also a pond in this park. Have you noticed how people that projected these parks around here like a pond? Hahaha.
