Florianópolis: Overview

Florianópolis is the capital city of Santa Catarina a state in South Region of Brazil. The most magical (not all the time) thing about this place is that it is an island and in the picture above you can see the bridge that makes possible the access to the island via highway, but don't worry there is also an international airport.

Florianópolis is a very touristic city for Brazilians and for some Latin-Americans mainly because of its beaches. I have the impression that for tourists from other parts of the Earth the most common destinations in Brazil are Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo (this is one of the main reasons why I am writing this blog in English). But if you are looking for a place with a very hot summer and with lots of beaches to go on vacations you MUST consider Florianópolis.

Floripa or Ilha da Magia (Island of Magic), as it is normally called, has almost 500 thousand inhabitants and a humid subtropical climate which means that it is going to rain during your summer vacations. Speaking of climate, during summer the average temperature is 28 ºC and during winter 13 ºC. Reminding that summer in Brazil lasts from December to March and winter from June to September.

In total the city has 42 beaches and this is its attraction. There are also 3 big malls: Beiramar, Iguatemi and Floripa, and the 3 of them gets crowded when it rains, because besides the beaches there aren't a lot of other activities to do.

I recommend that you choose a region of the city to stay based on what you want to do or see, because public transport isn't very good and, for example, to move from the city center to the north or south of the island it could take more than 2 hours. Today (feb./2018) the bus ticket costs R$ 4.20 (approx. US$ 1.31) and you will pay just once if you disembark at the terminals, but if the transfer occurs on the streets stops you will have to pay again.

There is also an executive bus (the yellow one) that makes some longer routes and you don't have to do transfers, but it is more expensive costing between R$ 7.00 (approx. US$ 2.18) and R$ 9.00 (approx. US$ 2.80) depending on the route. Therefore if you are with a group of people sometimes it will be cheaper to use Uber or 99pop.

Also mainly during summer there is a lot of traffic, so even if you rent a car it will take a long time to arrive at your destination.

If you are curious or planning your trip to Floripa stay tuned for more information.
